In this study, I used faculty interviews to explore participants’ perspectives and experiences as they reflected on how they could apply what they learned from a faculty development initiative, and how their teaching practices were impacted. The most significant findings from this research concern the importance of a supportive community as faculty members experiment with new teaching strategies, and how institutions need to take a stronger role in developing this supportive culture. Colleges and universities dedicate time and resources to providing professional development activities for faculty and must be thoughtful about where those resources are deployed. Understanding how instructors experience faculty development, and how these activities have the potential to impact their teaching practices, allows institutions to provide appropriate and useful programming for instructors.
